Fat Men and Shrinking Penises

January 25th, 2008 cate

Florida surgeon Dr. J. takes an interestingly terrifying peak at the effects of obesity in men. He says that when men gain weight, abdominal fat changes testosterone to estrogen that remains stored in all that extra fat. The unfortunate result is a shrinking “Mr. Happy” (or whatever you call your thing, i.e., Richard, Woody, Mini Me, Snake, Beaver Cleaver, Willy, Twinkie…well, you get my point, right. Sorry I got carried away.). This sad event is permanent! He’s saying that even later dieting will not correct the shrinkage to your little guy. Boo hooo hoooooooo!

Guys, that should be a great incentive to NOT get fat.   [source]

Hawaii Bans Aspartame, NutraSweet/Equal – Mahalo!!

January 25th, 2008 cate

Excerpt from rense.com:

“Efforts continue to ban this deadly excitoneurotoxic carcinogenic drug that is addicting the public and triggering so many symptoms and diseases from MS and lupus and seizures to Parkinson’s, diabetes and obesity and even blindness and death. An aspartame documentary, Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World, explains how Don Rumsfeld got this marketed when the FDA said no. Masquerading as an additive it’s a deadly drug that interacts with other drugs and vaccines.

No one can forget the gallant efforts of Senator Gerald Ortiz y Pino who sponsored the Senate bill to ban aspartame in New Mexico. One picture that remains in my mind is addressing the Senate with Senators sipping Diet Coke. Dr. Ken Stoller said “It’s hard to believe we are going to get anywhere with you drinking this but consider the children.” Aspartame is a teratogen triggering birth defects and mental retardation, reducing IQ, and triggering all types of behavioral and psychiatric problems….”

Optimism 1.0

January 24th, 2008 cate

If you think the title of this post sounds a bit geeky, you’d be right. Optimism one point OH sounds happy but is a serious little software application that identifies the triggers of depression. It helps make strategies to maintain long lasting mental health.

When people have mental health issues, particularly with depression, it takes a huge effort to get better and recover, but the greatest challenge remains in trying to stay well from that point on.

With Optimism software, users actively learn about their depression. They monitor patterns in their life and begin to see the various internal and external factors that affect their health. Once these factors are realized, it makes it easier to take control and leave depression far behind them. Users will no doubt learn a great deal about what really triggers depression. Maybe it’s a certain food or lack of sleep. Perhaps it’s from watching disturbing films or from a stressful work environment. Optimism helps people focus on specific triggers and they’ll know what to avoid if possible. Users will learn so many important things about themselves, and this will help them control their lives better.

Optimism features:
* Prompts users to keep a health record of all things that impact their mental state of being, both positive and negative. From there, it helps find strategies to stay healthy.

* Charting Changes – Optimism charts users’ triggers, symptoms and healthy activities to be able to identify relationships between the three in a simple, visual way.

* Reports – Optimism generates reports that document the triggers, symptoms and healthy activities so users can print records or helpful history to email to their health provider.

Optimism is quick and easy to use, only taking 2 to 3 minutes each day to enter data, and only a little bit longer to look more closely at the charts.

People, work on getting rid of (if not controlling) your depression, and stay mentally healthy. Try out this software and plan your health. Create a “Stay Well Plan,” which can be seen as a dynamic document that you adjust as you learn more about managing your illness. Print or email it to your health provider or aids, so they know how to help you stay on track.

Download the free demo now (for Mac)

NOTE: PC version should be released some time next month (February). I’ll post it when it’s available.

High Mercury Levels Are Found in Tuna Sushi

January 23rd, 2008 cate

From NYT:
tuna sushi has dangerous levels of mercury

Recent laboratory tests found so much mercury in tuna sushi from 20 Manhattan stores and restaurants that at most of them, a regular diet of six pieces a week would exceed the levels considered acceptable by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Sushi from 5 of the 20 places had mercury levels so high that the Food and Drug Administration could take legal action to remove the fish from the market. The sushi was bought by The New York Times in October.

“No one should eat a meal of tuna with mercury levels like those found in the restaurant samples more than about once every three weeks,” said Dr. Michael Gochfeld, professor of environmental and occupational medicine at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway, N.J.

Dr. Gochfeld analyzed the sushi for The Times with Dr. Joanna Burger, professor of life sciences at Rutgers University. He is a former chairman of the New Jersey Mercury Task Force and also treats patients with mercury poisoning.

The owner of a restaurant whose tuna sushi had particularly high mercury concentrations said he was shocked by the findings. “I’m startled by this,” said the owner, Drew Nieporent, a managing partner of Nobu Next Door. “Anything that might endanger any customer of ours, we’d be inclined to take off the menu immediately and get to the bottom of it.”

Although the samples were gathered in New York City, experts believe similar results would be observed elsewhere.

“Mercury levels in bluefin are likely to be very high regardless of location…”
