Parents! Your Kids Shouldn’t Eat Processed Food!

January 11th, 2008 cate

Mother of three, Robyn O’Brien has looked deep into the perplexing world of childhood food allergies and sees a conspiracy inside the food industry.

“Ms. O’Brien encourages people to do what she did: throw out as much nonorganic processed food as you can afford to. Avoid anything genetically modified, artificially created or raised with hormones. Don’t eat food with ingredients you can’t pronounce.

Once she cleaned out her cupboards, she said, her four children started behaving better. Their health problems, which her doctor attributed to allergies to milk and other foods, cleared up.

“It was absolutely terrifying to unearth this story,” she said over lunch at a restaurant in Boulder, Colo. “These big food companies have an intimate relationship with every household in America, and they are making our children sick. I was rocked. You don’t want to hear that this has actually happened.”

But has it?

Record numbers of parents are heading to doctors concerned that their children are allergic to a long list of foods. States are passing laws requiring schools to have policies protecting children with food allergies. But no one knows why the number of allergies seems to be on the rise, or even if they are rising as fast as some believe…”

Fava Beans as Hormone Replacement?

January 10th, 2008 cate

fava beans hormone replacement
“I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti” – Hannibal Lecter

Sorry bout the unrelated cannibalistic reference from Silence of the Lambs. I’m a brat!

From NewsTarget:

“Two years ago this month a good friend of ours joined us for a humble beginning of our natural nutrition and whole food preparation classes. She was one of those students who just took everything and ran with it. She lost about 15 pounds, her bowels started moving better and she looked ten years younger.

For all of this, she complained that she was being driven crazy with hot flashes and did not want to go on hormone therapy. She decided to come see me professionally.

I spoke with her and quizzed her about her diet. She had been following our health program exactly. I figured that she just needed an infusion of plant based hormones.

I explained to her that plant hormones are the best protection in the …”

If People Could Change Just One Thing About Themselves…

January 9th, 2008 cate

If people could change just one thing about themselves and only one thing, I’d wish for them to choose: eating healthful, unprocessed, untreated, organic REAL food. Why? Food is where practically everything begins and what you eat is directly related to how you feel physically and emotionally. Don’t believe me? Drink a coffee every day (laden with pesticides, and chemicals) from that popular coffee chain on every corner and just see how you feel. Pay attention. Then, stop drinking it for a while and see how you feel. I can guarantee that you will notice a huge difference, not to mention that you will feel less stressed, irritable and angry. It’s the same with foods. There’s a real cause-effect going on, and if you pay attention, you’d notice.

What you eat is so very important, which is why this blog starts with “Diet” – obviously, not having anything to do with “dieting” per se but focusing on eating right.

When you eat real organic fruit and vegetables, you body doesn’t take in any of the toxic pesticides that get sprayed on non-organic produce. (In most cases, the chemicals stay underneath the skin.) If you haven’t heard, pesticides were not meant to be consumed AND they are not good for your health.

Another effect you might notice when switching to organic food is that some of your illnesses might disappear. For example: psoriasis , depression, allergies, sinusitis, constipation, asthma, congestion, rashes – to name just a few, are some of the many, many maladies caused by unheathful foods, the worst culprits being processed foods, and factory farm meats.

All this isn’t to say you shouldn’t exercise and adopt healthy lifestyle options (like quitting smoking) it’s just a hypothetical, “If you had to choose one thing…”

This subject is just the tip of the iceberg, and you’ll find me blogging more specifically about the dangers of bad food, as well as the benefits of Real Food. Stay tuned, readers!

The Importance of Breathing

January 8th, 2008 cate

Duh. I know breathing is important to live but there’s much MORE to breathing than people realize.

If you simply take time to be aware of breathing in and breathing out, a wonderful thing happens: You stop thinking, particularly about all the chaos that is swimming around in your head. Whether you’re thinking about what you have to do or what you will do, or what someone said or did to you, etc. you have a tendency to lose yourself. You get a bit lost in the outside world. What that mean is if you are conscious of your breathing, you forget about the superficial, and then focus on the Now. You are living in the present moment and that is very important.

When you are not living in the present moment, you are either living in the future or the past and when you are in those places, you can not see clearly or deeply. You miss everything because you are not “here” in the Present. When you concentrate on breathing in and breathing out, you begin to be where your body is in the present moment. The body and mind are no longer separated from each other. When your mind and body are unified, you begin feel calm, relaxed, composed and aware; you’re on your way to becoming truly yourself.

How to Think More Positively

January 7th, 2008 cate

think positively
It’s a known fact that the power of positivity has had amazing beneficial effects on people. Studies have shown that positive people tended to be in better health throughout their lives, and well, face it, more likable. I mean, who likes a grump?? Not me. There’s nothing worse than a sourpuss with an attitude problem but it’s never too late to change so here are some tips to keep you on sunnier side of life, the glass is half full and the YES team:

1. When you find yourself having a terribly negative attitude leading to grumpville, slap yourself with a large trout. (figuratively speaking, of course) Just stop yourself. It’s you who has control over your emotions. If you cannot control your own emotions, seek professional help.

2. During these times of unpleasant thoughts, try to examine WHY you feel that way. What is the evidence and proof that you should be able to feel this way. If you can find vast reasons to substantiate your negative feelings and attitudes, try to beckon your compassion. Try to laugh. Try to smile and even force yourself to think the opposite. How? Just understanding you’ll feel better, should be a great incentive.

3. When jumping into negative attitudes, try to conjure up different scenarios for why something is happening. Try to envision that all is happening for a better future outcome. Imagine that things will get better. Example: You break your leg on the ski slope. No one is immediately around to help you so help is delayed. Don’t jump into the conclusion that you’ll die. Don’t jump to the conclusion that your leg won’t heal correctly. Look for reasons that will help you not to do that again! Maybe you need ski lessons. :D You know that won’t happen again. That’s positive, right?!

4. Think about a positive attitude as much as you can, if not all the time. Even say out loud, “I have a positive attitude!” Words are powerful and you’ll be amazed at how that can change your life.

5. Remember that a positive attitude makes you feel good. ‘Nuf said.
